Following on from our ever successful Summer League Pairs we decided to run a mini Summer League Singles competition so that certain players could break the shackles off their partner who had been letting them down all summer to try and win some cash off their own back.
Not to cause trouble, but rumour has it that Jason (who's growing his hair so he looks even more like shaggy from scooby-doo!) reckons he has reached that stage in his career that he needs to be winning things!! Guess this means Wally will be looking for a new partner in the forthcoming Handicapped Doubles!!!!! Poster is up NOW! so get your name down quick before he comes knocking on your DOOR!!!!
The tournament started with 3 leagues, one on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday with a straight knockout format on each night for 5 weeks with players recieving points for how well they did on each night. 8 players were wittled down from approximately 40 who had taken part to reach the Money Stages.
At the Quarter-Finals stage we lost Ricky Long, Lewis Hambly, Robert Cooper & Chris Read (Me) who all pocketed £15. This left us the Motley Crew pictured to contest for the top prizes on finals night.
Jason Russell had to take on Jeff Cubitt in the first Semi-Final. With his new found confidence and claims (remember he's ready to win things!!) Jason walked in moaning that he couldn't give Jeff 17 start and could we hurry up and get it on because he was HUNGOVER, similar preparation to such winners as Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry in their hayday!!! Jeff improving all the time now that he has the experience that playing in the winter league brings won 2v1 leaving a dispondent Jase to ponder what might have been.....
Jason's Partner in Crime Ash-leeeeey(any fans of family guy will know he's a dead ringer of Chris) Moore also approached his semi-final somewhat negatively worrying more about who he was playing than the fact that he was getting 50 start and is more than capable of winning if he played well. In fairness after a pre-match pepp talk from yours truly he came up against Aiden playing some top draw snooker and was comfortably dispatched 2v0 (Sorry Ash... I still believe you could have won though...)
So a first final for Jeff Cubitt but it would be against one of the clubs top players on top form. Jeff would be aided by a 73 start but true to form Aiden clinched the opening frame with a superb 64 clearance. It was looking ominous for Jeff as Aiden rattled in a 59 break early in the second frame. Jeff however, somewhat oblivious to what Aiden was doing (and pretty much every thing going on around him) managed to find some of his trademark lamp-shade pots to leave Aidens jaw on the floor and the game level at 1-a-piece.
The final frame saw Aiden put in another almost faultless display with another couple of 40 breaks, but still he couldn't crack Jeff who was so laid back he could hardly see over the cushions! with Aiden becoming more and more anxious the frame went all the way to the last two colours. Jeff with his all-out attitude to the game went for one long pot too many and left Aiden a middle distance pot to clinch the title which he grasped with aplomp.
Well done to all who took part and look out for future compo's on the notices boards and right here on the web!!!!!!
