(Inside Left Winner Robert Cooper & Right R/Up D.Swinburn)
For the first time in the club's history the Norfolk County Singles Championships were held here last Sunday. Three of the clubs players turned up for the event hoping that home advantage would play a part in the days action, Robert 'Rocket' Cooper, Darren 'Walter' Swinburn and Chris 'Snail' Read. This proved to be the case in the early stages as all 3 of them won their opening rounds 3v0, with Chris putting in an impressive performance to beat Karl Beare a former 5-time champion.
The next round saw Snail and the Rocket post the two highest breaks of the tournament so far, 72 & 79 respectively, both falling down on the yellow when clearances looked probable. Again the Pot Black boys cruised through 3v0 to reach the last four with only King's Lynn's Nathan Jones able to stop one of them claiming the title.
The first Semi-Final saw the clash of two Pot Black 'A' team mates Cooper and Ready. Both players knowing each others games so well found it hard to gain any advantage early on but when Coops missed a brown Chris was able to clear enough balls to win the opening frame. This would be the highlight of the match for Snail as he continued to struggle to find the form he showed in the first few rounds and the Rocket with a couple of 40's and a 54break won the match 3v1 at a canter.
Darren had to play young Nathan in the second Semi-Final and with Nathan claiming victory the last time the two met defending champion Swinny was up for revenge. This clash proved to be the match of the tournament so far with both players looking fluent amongst the balls. Nathan produced an 87 break to tie the match at 2v2, which ended up being the highest break of the tournament. With each player knowing one mistake could cost them their place in the final Swinny knuckled down to make a composed 50 break, which in the circustances showed his class, to set up an all Pot Black Final.
The final was truly fitting of the occassion with both players making fluent breaks. The match ebbed and flowed with Coooper and Swinny exchanging 50 breaks to take the tournament to a last frame decider. Darren got in first and looked like sealing the match only to break down with a couple of reds remaining. Rocket Robert would not make the same mistake clearing the table to become Norfolk Champion for 2009.
